Thanks for putting this together. Just wanted to point out, Squarespace and Wix aren't the only options out there for drag-and-drop web builders. There's also indie options like Simple Webpage Builder by Stefan Bohacek and Wobble Web by Olivia Jack.
Carrd(dot)co is also a really excellent site too. Lots of role players in FFXIV use carrd for their role playing character sheet, venue, or services. I designed a bunch of websites for in game currency.
I discovered the concept of the indie web through a niche Minecraft Youtuber who had a very unique way of self-expression. They had a neocities and I was hooked in descending such a rabbithole! Currently trying to figure out CSS because the whole movement really inspires me. It just proves how terrific art can be in different forms which made me fall in love with the indie web : )
So grateful I ran into this. As an artist wary/weary of all the ai scraping, who needs to have made an art portfolio yesterday, and a lover of all things indie this is an inspiration.
I love scrolling through neocities websites, it reminds me of being in the school library. I hope we can see more communities build up around webrings and forums again. Using apps instead of browsers is basically an intranet.

ahh I made a neocities site in 2024 and it was so fun!! The community is so great, i 100% recommend this hobby to any and everyone I can.
Bringing back webrings & blogging communities would be cool.

I've found my people! I've been so obsessed with Cameron's World!

This is great - I'm really happy to come across this. I remember this web... I'm old enough to be retro.
Such a good read - thanks for putting all this together
Thank you for the article, it really inspired me to research the indie dev and maybe come back to coding again.
I can recommend the indie website myNoise.net, great sound generator for background noise with a very hardworking creator.
