Metafilter is great as long as you think just like everyone else.
Metafilter lost 80%+ of its userbase in a few years and drove its owner to give up the site to preserve his mental health. In no way could that site be accurately called "nice," "kind," or "welcoming."

The current small and quiet state is not helped by the exodus of BIPOC, trans, and other marginalized people.
See, for example, this comment listing 40+ Metatalk threads between 2001 and 2017 about racism on Mefi condoned and sometimes perpetrated by the mods: https://metatalk.metafilter.com/25225/Hearing-from-our-members-of-color#1340429 The user who collated that list left a few years later. The threads have continued.
