At last! We are about to kickoff the New_ Public Festival (LIVE here at 11:15am ET).
Last year, we set out to create an event that would help us think through and model the principles of public space. We planned to hold the festival in the Bay Area at 16th St. Station in Oakland, which once served as the last Western stop for the trans-continental railway, and was home to the first Black union in the country. Then the pandemic happened.
Today, we kick off a three-day festival in virtual space. The spaces we have created don’t have the same historical significance, but they will host an equally important, more timely and urgent, conversation about the future of our public lives — and the spaces that hold them.
The event will be livestreamed at → NEWPUBLICFESTIVAL.ORG ← , where we will also unveil new content related to the launch of our “signals” research and framework. Feel free to share this link with anyone you know who might be interested in what we are building—we’ve tried to create a provocative, unconventional, and inspiring set of conversations and experiences.
The full festival schedule is HERE. We will be live with opening remarks at 11:15am ET, and our first keynote will be delivered at noon ET by the formidable Danielle Allen. She will then be in conversation with an eclectic group of designers of public space in different mediums — moderated by Sara Hendren, New_ Public contributing editor, and author of What Can a Body Do? How We Meet the Built World.
At 1:30pm ET, our co-directors Talia Stroud and Eli Pariser will share our signals research and framework.
